Sands Resorts Celebrate the Holidays with Arts and Cultural Showcases

This holiday season, Sands’ regions are hosting a number of performances and artistic exhibitions that showcase the rich cultural heritage of their host communities. The diverse array of programming featured at the end of this year caps a robust calendar in 2024, underscoring Sands’ commitment to promoting and preserving its local regions’ cultural and artistic vibrancy.

Showcasing Macao as a Performing Arts and Cultural Center

The Sands China Performing Arts Program kicked off the holiday season on November 30 and December 1 with “Classics Reimagined: Golden Hour Harmonies,” a series of free outdoor concerts featuring the renowned Janoska Ensemble, world-famous pianist Niu Niu and the world’s top harmonicist Gordon Lee.

The musicians performed a number of classical works and original pieces in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland. Sands China organized the concerts at the Macao Cultural Centre Plaza with support from the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Macao Government Tourism Office.

These performances also concluded the second year of the Sands China Performing Arts Program, which Sands China launched in 2023 to broaden the performing arts scope in Macao with premier national, local and overseas projects. The program has offered local residents and visitors a wide-ranging schedule of performing arts events, including dance, theatrical productions, classical Cantonese opera and instrumental music.

“We are pleased to leverage our diverse resources through the Sands Performing Arts Program, continually bringing world-class performance art projects from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Europe, as well as promoting artistic exchange between Macao and other regions,” Dr. Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China, said. “Our goal is to create a vibrant atmosphere for art appreciation while expanding our audience base, thus laying a solid foundation for the development of Macao’s local creative and cultural industries.”

The Sands China Performing Arts Program aligns with the Macao SAR government’s vision for the integrated tourism and leisure industry to promote Macao as a platform for international exchange and as a center for performing arts and culture in East Asia.

Sands China also is closing out its ongoing showcase of local artists and Chinese culture at the Sands Gallery at the Grand Suites at Four Seasons in 2024 with “Echoes of a Golden Age: Macro Events through the Micro Visions of Macao’s Legendary Contemporary Artists.” The exhibition runs through Jan. 5 and features a quarter century of works from nine local contemporary art masters, spanning Chinese ink painting, oil painting, watercolor, acrylic painting, sketching, fineliner drawing, digital illustration and photography.

Celebrating with Live Music and Museum Exhibitions in Singapore

Marina Bay Sands also is offering opportunities for Singapore visitors and residents to enjoy a variety of performing arts and art exhibitions during the holiday season. The resort brought back its premier concert series, Sands Live Season, in December with a powerhouse line-up of renowned music artists from China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Sands Live Season is featuring seven concerts over four months with performances by popular mandopop artists Jane Zhang, Firdhaus, Leah Dou and A-Lin; Cantopop sensations Twins and Liza Wang; and local music legends Lee Weisong and Lee Sisong.

Marina Bay Sands introduced Sands Live in 2014 as a series of intimate concerts that have attracted globally acclaimed performers such as The Rolling Stones, Michael Bublé, Aaron Kwok and Celine Dion. After a pandemic hiatus from 2020-2022, the resort relaunched Sands Live in 2023 with an expanded initiative focusing on Asian entertainment called Sands Live Season, with performances by Hong Kong legend George Lam, Cantopop stars Joey Yung and Leo Ku, as well as South Korean pop stars PSY and RAIN.

At ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands also provides a platform for local, regional and international artists to showcase their work. This holiday season, the museum is presenting two exhibitions, including “Altered States: Experiments in Moving Image” and “The World of Studio Ghibli.”

Altered States features experimental analogue film and immersive, large-scale installations by both local and international artists and filmmakers, while The World of Studio Ghibli, a partnership with the renowned Japanese animation studio, depicts scenes from 11 of Studio Ghibli’s iconic films.

Marina Bay Sands opened ArtScience Museum in 2011 as a major cultural institution that explores the intersection between art, science, technology and culture. Since then, the museum has staged large-scale exhibitions by renowned artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, M.C. Escher, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Vincent Van Gogh, Olafur Eliasson, Anish Kapoor and Mariko Mori, as well as major exhibitions exploring science and technology. It has also produced original exhibitions in-house.
